Oh what an out-and-out joy is this film!

As you know by now, the fantastic James Cagney sings, dances and acts his device through this rousing biopic of George M. Cohan. He’s directed by Michael Curtiz, a director who apparently could work in any genre of movie, and invent masterpieces. Pull up his name on imdb and you’ll study what I mean.

Anyways, the film traces his life from his infant vaudevillian beginnings to his conquering of Broadway. After seeing this, you’ll know why there’s a statue of Cohan in Times Square.

The acting, as expected, is pleasurable, with the sweet Joan Leslie as his admire interest Mary, Walter Huston as his dad; Cagney’s sister plays Cagney’s sister…but what will bring you to recognize this movie again and again are the musical interludes.

Cagney is simply spectacular. He is a comet, bouncing around the Broadway stage. His dancing often flirts with straight-out levitation. I articulate there are times when his feet flit across the cover…

Then contemplate the songs…”Yankee Doodle Dandy”, “Mary”, “Give My Regards to Broadway” and the most patriotic song I’ve ever heard, “Over There.”

That song was written for the troops of WW I, and this film was being made when Pearl Harbor was attacked. The design this one song is faded in this film, I guarantee, will end with you forever. And intelligent that this movie was made during that time only enhances your experience…but I didn’t know it until afterwards, and it made no disagreement.

And that leads to the one thing I feel is overlooked in most reviews of this film: the script. It’s has a strong epic, huge lines, terrific set-pieces and exquisite twists. It’s laughable as all-get-out, and heart-wrenching when you least examine it.

The movie is as American as can be…the rags-to-riches rise of the central figure in Broadway history (the Broadway musical being essentially an American creation), the plot his family travels to all the unique states as they are incorporated…the evolution of Unusual York City…WW I…WW II…it’s all here!

And from beginning to ruin, Cohan (and the filmmakers) wear their “Gargantuan Mature Flag” on their proverbial sleeves, proudly and unabashedly. Patriotism is a positive theme througout the film, rising to dizzying heights just before the credits. Patriotism portrayed simply and honestly, without any hard political zigzag or satirical edge.

The DVD, one of those sweet Warner 2-disc sets, is exemplary…stout transfer, nice extras…bravo Warner, again, for treating your classics with respect.

It’s inarguable: this is one of the mammoth films of all time. I envy those of you about to perceive it for the first time, and I train you it won’t be your last!

GREAT FILM! And making it to the top 100 (for the 100 best movies ever made), this musical starring James Cagney as George M. Cohan is about the life of Cohan and the 4 Cohan’s. George Cohan, wrote songs such as “The Yankee Doodle Boy”, “Give My Regards to Broadway”, “Overthere”, “You’re a Expansive Old-fashioned Flag”, “Mary”, “Off The Characterize”, “H.A.R.R.I.G.A.N.” etc….

In this movie playing his sister (Josie Cohan), is really his exact sister (Jeanne Cagney) . And on the place, Eddie Foy was played by a son of his (Eddie Foy Jr.) . At the ending when James Cagney is walking down the stairs, then is tap dancing was not in the script. Originally Cagney was to unprejudiced traipse down, the rest he improvised.

If you’re keen in musicals with noble stories to issue and song & dances numbers (that were first done by Cohan when the plays first came out and were a expansive hit.), this would be a trustworthy movie to earn for your classic musical collection.

This is a lushly lavish, sensuously fair film, superlatively directed by Mira Nair, a world class director notorious for such other cinematic masterpieces as “Salaam Bombay”, “Mississippi Masala”, and the more modern art house feature, “Monsoon Wedding”. As are her other films, “Kama Sutra” is an smart and mesmerizing chronicle, peppered with good performances by a stellar cast.

Set in sixteenth century India, this is the record of Maya (Indira Varma), a servant girl and companion to Tara (Sarita Choudry), a Maharani destined to be Queen to a Raj. Childhood friends, they are to become palace rivals as the fates pit them one against the other, only to have them both become casualties of care for. Maya, tired of being treated as a second class citizen and of receiving Tara’s castoff clothing, makes a life defining decision on the eve of Tara’s marriage to Raj Singh (Naveen Andrews) . Sensing that the Raj desires her, Maya gives herself to him, later telling Tara that it is she who now has a cast off from Maya.

After Tara departs with her husband, Maya’s perfidy is revealed to the household by Tara’s hunchbacked brother, who, coveting Maya for himself, had spied upon her and saw her in flagrante delicto with the Raj. Ousted by Tara’s outraged family, Maya leaves to manufacture her arrangement in the world. She comes across a sculptor, Jai Kumar (Ramon Tikarum), of Raj Singh’s royal household and falls in worship with him. Unfortunately, timing is everything. By the time Jai realizes that he, too, is in care for with her, it is too leisurely, as Maya is now the celebrated courtesan of the by now debauched Raj, who is obsessed with her and cannot seem to accumulate her out of his system, remarkable to the horror of Tara, as well as Jai.

Trained in the arts of savor by the heavenly and elegant Rasa Devi (Rekha), Maya, as a royal courtesan, is a sensuous, aesthetic sylph. Tara, now the Queen, is insanely jealous of her husband’s desire for Maya, but must tolerate it, as must Jai, as it is a culturally popular method of life. Unfortunately, when the Raj discovers that Maya and Jai are unexcited in admire, all hell breaks loose, and the piper must be paid.

This is a fantastic film of a woman’s straggle to come by herself within culturally imposed constraints. It is a sage of the vicissitudes of life that leave imprints on one’s meander. Told in the context of carnal esteem and desire, it also tells of a admire sublime. This is essentially a woman’s film, sensuous and erotic in its imagery, a veritable sumptuous feast for the senses. While there is some nudity in the film, it is tastefully and beautifully filmed, as well as highly erotic.

Indira Varma, in what is her camouflage debut, is sensational as the entrancing Maya, imbuing her with an impishness, as well as with a sinuous and bewitching sensuality. Sarita Choudry, of “Mississippi Masala” fame, is kindly as the delicate and exotic Tara, who appears to be relegated to a life of frigidity and jealousy. Rekha, the well known and exquisitely radiant Indian actress, is hypnotic as Rasa Devi, teacher of the Kama Sutra. Naveen Andrews gives a profitable performance as the debauched Raj, and Ramon Tikarum is compelling as the conflicted artist. They both, however, remove a backseat to the women in the film.

Filmed on residence in India, this is a film that should be watched for its sheer beauty. Bravo!

Hotter than “Fire”, but without the same depth of emotion and not distinguished of a memoir line, Kama Sutra comes over as a shapely art movie, with graceful scenery, quick-witted color, and maximum expend of nature, light and texture. Yes, there are also admire scenes that are not for the prudish, and some burly frontal female nudity and bare backsides, but in essence it is a account of care for and loss and debauchery and death.

Indira Varma is attractive as the servant girl Maya, portraying her as young, flirtatious and resilient, while at the same time, regal and vulnerable. Her glorious eyes grunt volumes, and there are entire scenes that are conveyed without the need for dialogue.

Sarita Choudhury plays a major supporting role as Tara, the intended bride of Raj Singh (Naveen Andrews) . Although a lifelong friend of Maya, she turns on her in a fit of jealousy when the Raj lets his seek crawl to Maya on their very first meeting, and her reaction causes Maya to cruise the room in shame.

Seeking revenge, Maya makes a pre-marital visit to the Raj, and gives herself to him in a performance that he never forgets.

She however forgets that people who live in transparent tents shouldn’t fool around, and when the night’s events are disclosed by Tara’s humpbacked peeping tom of a brother, whom Maya has rejected outright as a husband, she has no choice but to leave her home as a fallen woman.

Unlike the well-liked advertisement however, she is able to gain up, and thanks to the artistic skill of a stone carver Jai Kumar (Ramon Tikaram) and the friendship and teaching of Rasa Devi, (Shroud anecdote Rehka) teacher of the Kama Sutra, she finds fresh confidence and a whole novel attitude. She falls for Jai gargantuan time, but unfortunately for him, he doesn’t react well to unconditional adore and chases her straight into the initiate arms of Raj Singh as his #1 celebrated courtesan.

Tara is now living the life of the neglected wife of a debauched husband, and has a disastrous wedding night when he calls her another woman’s name. Her unhappiness is aggravated when she discovers Maya lolling off in a hot tub at the palace, and unable to cope with her area decides on a drastic course of action.

Raj is by now totally obsessed with Maya, and when he discovers that his stone carver friend and his number one girl have not only rekindled the flames, but are busy fanning them when he’s not around, he goes berserk, and orders the appropriate punishment for Jai.

To end things off, while Raj has been partying, his kingdom has been falling, and you don’t need a beefy lady singing to mutter you that it’s over for him.

Excellent performances by Indira Varma, Sarita Choudhury and Rekha build this movie worthwhile, and the attention to detail by Mira Nair makes for resplendent watching.

The Gundam timeline covers over 400 episodes in 14 series: 4 covering the One Year War, 5 covering the Universal Century, and 5 covering alternate universes. The share we are receiving here in the US is the 49-episode Gundam Glide series, one of the alternate universes, aired in Japan from November 1996 through early 1998.

The record is plot in the year A.C. (After Colony) 195. Five colonies have been spot up in deep location at the Lagrange Points. Something about gravitational flux holding them in location above Earth. Anyways, they had lived in peace until a secret organization in the United Earth Sphere Alliance named Oz started infiltrating the ranks of the Alliance military. They proceeded to engage the colonies by force, so five scientists (each from a different colony) sent special mobile suits, each piloted by a teenaged boy, down to Earth to extinguish Oz. The suits are called Gundams because they are made of gundanium, a special alloy that can only be refined in microgravity.

The pilots are Heero Yuy (Japanese), Duo Maxwell (American), Trowa Barton (Unknown, European? ), Quartre Reberba Winner (Arabic), and Chang Wufei (Called Wufei Chang in the US dub, but he’s Chinese, so family name comes first) . Each has his occupy Gundam, his have cloak, and his believe adventure, though they often despicable paths as the mission gradually changes from revenge on Oz to defending the planet and the colonies from total chaos.

Gundam Soar is the best of the entire Gundam saga, but don’t seize my word for it. You’re gonna have to watch for yourself.

The Gundam Saga began in 1979 with 3 movies entitled Shin Kidousenki Gundam (Mobile Siut Gundam) each movie was 2 1/2 hours long. This started a saga that now contains over 56 series, unrelated other than that they all absorb the immense Mechas (Robots) called Gundams. Gundam Skim premeired in 1995 in Japan and now (2000) is running with a English dub in the US on Cartoon Network. It is the yarn of 5 teenage Gundam Pilots and their adventures trying to set both the Earth and the area Colonies that sent them to fight. Each caricter has a rather disturbing past and there seems to be a lot of Yaoi hinting going on throughout the seriese between Duo Maxwell and Heero Yuy and between Quatre Raberba Winner and Trowa Barton (Triton Bloom) . The seriese is 49 episodes long and contains a lot of violence. (Charicteristic of Mecha Animes) . Contrary to what the Amizon review says the DVD is actually rated 13 and Up for language and violence and Quatre is spelled with an E at the waste of it, not an A. The DVD also comes with a holographic image of Heero and Gundam Wing-01 and has the first 5 episodes dubbed and subtitled. This seriese has become my current over the last few months. It has truely tall animation, the music is big and the vocal artists from both counrties are phenominal! If you relish GW then there is also a 3 section OVA seriese about these charicters that was released in 1998 (in Japan) called “Shin Kidousenki Gundam Wing: Endless Waltz” that Cartoon Network will be running soon in America. Shortly after it premeirs on TV it will be available to take. It is actaully already available at Cartoon/Anime/Manga/Comic conventions in the US. It has been sighted at “Comic-com” in both subbed and dubbed formats.

Do not consume this movie yet. Magnolia butchered the subtitles and will be releasing a version with the theatrical subtitles in the come future. Magnolia will not replace this disc with the fixed one, so enjoy off on your choose. You will know the proper version when you witness “subtitles: English (theatrical release) ” in the specs on the befriend.

I was very disappointed with this DVD. So considerable so that I’m returning my copy of it. I saw the movie in theatres, and found it masterful. The extraordinary tone is fragment of the beauty of the film, and the subtitles on the US DVD release are a travesty. They select most of the subtlety from the tone and characters (explore http://iconsoffright.com/news/2009/03/let_the_wrong_subtitles_in_to.html for examples) . The movie I saw in theatres was a masterpiece; the movie on this DVD (using subtitles) is a mediocrity. If you are going to select this DVD, either download and expend the theatrical subtitles or exhaust the mediocre dubbing track. As for me, I’m going to scrutinize for another region’s copy or wait for a re-release.

I won’t go into praising the movie. It’s already an American Classic and obviously anyone who’s contemplating buying this will already worship it. I felt guilty about double-dipping but the cute leather jacket was an irresistable gimmick. The following discusses mainly technical aspects of the unique disc.

Buy,Download, Or Stream Grease! Click Here

I did a one-to-one comparison with the older disc. The characterize has been cleaned up and looks noticeably different, though not necessarily better. The petite dirt specks and film nicks, few as they were on the first disc, have been almost entirely eliminated. There is less grain. The report also looks brighter, due to application of higher disagreement. This has both definite and negative effects. In the darker scenes; like ONJ’s “Hopelessly Devoted to You,” the greater disagreement (deeper unlit levels and brighter highlights) makes it appear clearer, and I personally recall it this contrivance. Some viewers may not like it as the lighting now appears harder and more “artificial”. In other places, the greater disagreement tends to wipe out detail in the brighter parts of the picture; you can peer this at the opening beach sequence, where the scene now appears brighter and clearer but the finer detail in the sandstone rocks have been obliterated in the glare. So pluses and minuses, but overall I liked the modern transfer.

The audio too has been remastered. The bass here is noticeably more prominent than on the previous DVD. It has that very satisfying visceral feel to it but there is also swamping of the underlying instrumentation. However I doubt if many people would seek or bother. What reviewers have referred to as an echoey quality on the first remix is unruffled there. It is actually an over exaggerated reverb added to the vocal track. Most of the tracks in Grease have electronic reverb applied but some are more positive and artifical than others; especially so in the 1998 remix featured here. The most egregious examples would be at the “Notice at Me, I’m Sandra Dee” reprise and Travolta’s “Electrifyin’” repeats in “You’re The One That I Want.” Again I liked the newer, audio remix, mainly for its richer bass extension. Like previous reviewers have said, the 2.0 Stereo featured here is not the unique theatrical Stereo mix but a downmix of the later DD 5.1 remix (made in 1998 for its 20th Anniversary re-release) . And purists should effect that the DD 5.1 remix (1998) is actually messing about with the music itself – there are additional instrumental and vocal overlays not found on the fresh theatrical soundtrack. (Eg. additional bass drum in second half of “Summer Nights,” background vocals in “Hopelessly Devoted to You,” and a clap-track in “We Go Together.”) Perhaps someday the producers will discover fit to release Grease with its unusual unembellished soundtrack.

The precise delight here are the Extras. My favourite is the 15-minute long “25th Anniversary DVD Originate Party.” Exerpts from the party concert include plump length versions of Olivia Newton John singing “Hopelessly Devoted to You,” Olivia and John Travolta singing “You’re The One That I Want,” and the reassembled cast singing “Summer Nights.” All stunning performances packed with fun-filled nostalgia. The 11 deleted/extended scenes are all in B&W and last for honest 10 minutes. Nothing earth-shattering here but respectable to have all the same. The Sing-Along was something I appreciated. In the previous DVD, there was no converse access to individual songs. A trace about the Sing-Along subtitles. These are multicoloured, exciting, karaoke-style, lyrics that accompany the songs and can be activated within the film or in a separate Sing-Along session. It apparently caused problems for some viewers. I tried it out on several DVD players, a Sony, a Pioneer and a Denon, one of which was over 5 years used. The lyrics displayed without any plight. It also worked on a computer DVD-ROM drive (Pioneer), so at least these models apparently work. Only the main feature is anamorphic (enhanced for widescreen TV – 2.35:1 OAR) . All the extras are in standard 1.33:1 fullscreen.

As far as film musicals are concerned, nothing comes halt to “Grease” in terms of tantalizing to a mass audience of all ages, races, and generations. Though situation in the fifties, “Grease” remains deeply entrenched in the seventies, as it defined that freewheeling decade’s carefree attitude and innocence while drawing inspiration from the Elvis era. Smooth the top-grossing movie musical of all time, “Grease” works as a coming-of-age film we can all recount to – it sings (spacious songs from the Broadway classic plus chart-topping classics from the Bee Gees and Olivia Newton-John’s longtime collaborator, John Farrar), it dances (Rydel High’s Gym Dance), zips (”the chicks’ll cream for Greased Lightning”) and celebrates youth and friendship.

Buy,Download, Or Stream Grease! Click Here

Twenty five years after its first theatrical release, the movie serene feels and sounds recent even through its nostalgia, thanks to star-making performances from Travolta, Newton-John and Stockard Channing, to its clever wordplay and its irreverent eye at high school – when everything and anything is possible. It’s a movie that gets better with recount viewings, as audiences associate seeing it with a singular moment in time. Cameo appearances from golden greats like Frankie Avalon (”Beauty School Dropout”), Sid Ceasar and Edd Byrnes are funny gems.

The now-world-famous cast is hard to beat … Didi Conn and Stockard Channing are favorable as Frenchy (THE beauty school dud) and Rizzo (the tough girl with a soft place), while Eve Arden (Our Miss Brooks) gets the supporting role of a lifetime. Dody Goodman as her daffy assistant is a hoot, but the film belongs to the music and the performances of its two principles. Olivia Newton-John is a sublime choice for Sandy. Though requiring re-tooling from the recent stage point to, her character’s Aussie born lass is a perfect combination of girl-next-door sweetness and (later on) I-Am-Woman-hear-me-roar guts. Perhaps no transformation has been so effectively crop in a movie as ONJ’s honorable girl gone wild. Besides setting off fashion trends and the lycra industry, Sandy’s evolution reminds today’s teens that you can be hip AND nice. That’s a testament to the singer-actress’ presence in this film and her ongoing chronicle. Travolta is also sublime as Danny, a mix of cocky creep and silly-boy charm that’s never malicious…impartial young. His Danny plays both sides of the teen-angst fence, whether telling his version of “Summer Nights” to the boys, or sweetly professing his care for for “Sandy” at the drive-in (drive-ins are space for a comeback if this DVD finds itself into everyone’s home!) After 25 years and countless viewings, Olivia and Travolta acquire exquisite music together!

Guaranteed a winner in any home, “Grease” gets better with bid viewings and remains accessible, fun and great. As a backdrop for baby boomers’ high school years and our memories of all thats happened since…”Grease” remains the word! Thrilled to have this out on DVD!!!

Ronald Reagan might have gotten the nickname of the “Gipper” from this 1940 bio-pic of legendary Notre Dame football coach Knute Rockne, but it was customary character actor Pat O’Brien who had the role of a lifetime in the lead. James Cagney had lobbied hard for the role, but when the actor signed a petition supporting the Republican (and anti-Catholic) government in the Spanish Civil War, Notre Dame refused to okay him for the piece. This was the first of only two movies ever filmed on the campus in South Bend, and if you do know that the other one was “Rudy” you should at least have been able to guess it had to be that one.

“Knute Rockne All American”, which was added to the National Film Registry in 1997, is a fairly standard bio-pic, evincing the almost documentary style that was standard at the time. We recognize how the young Rockne (played by Johnny Sheffield, a.k.a. Boy in the Johnny Weissmuller Tarzan movies) learned to appreciate football, revolutionized the game with the forward pass, and coached his alma mater to glory with the Four Horsemen and George Gipp. The result is a long series of episodes from Rockne’s life that have varying degrees of appeal, such as when he picks up the thought for his backfield shift from watching chorus girls dance and experiments with the conception using his wife and their dinner guests.

Lots of footage of proper Notre Dame games are worked into the film, although I have no draw of brilliant if any of it is of the staunch games being portrayed (I would be enchanting to know) . O’Brien’s performance seems a tad wooden, but if you have ever seen true film clips of Rockne you know he is in the ballpark. A lot of the charm of this film comes from the ethos of the unique Rockne, an American memoir who was probably the first distinguished victim of an airplane break. The result is not expansive, but certainly compelling (plus we all learn the suitable pronunciation of his name as being Ka-Nute) .

Reagan’s supporting role is deservedly memorable. That same year he would derive to play third banana George Armstrong Custer to Errol Flynn and Olivia DeHavilland in “The Santa Fe Hasten” and would provide his best performance in “King’s Row” before military service in World War II effectively derailed his acting momentum and ultimately region his life on a different path.

Final Note: While there is diminutive doubt that Rockne invented the forward pass, there is debate over one aspect of this film. In his first scene as George Gipp, Reagan is sitting around doing nothing when Rockne orders him to go in at halfback to play against the varsity and race the ball. Gipp asks “How far? ” and proceeds to rush it serve all the method. After crossing the goal line he bounces the ball off the endzone, instead of laying it down for the “touchdown.” An argument has been made that this was the first spike in the history of football. At least it is the first “recorded” spike. Did the new tradition of choreographed celebrations all stem from what Ronald Reagan did in this 1940 film? You choose if that is yet another share of the Reagan legacy that is being reconsidered this week.

I consider the right testament to this movie’s appeal is that it is aloof watchable after more than 60 years to both hard-core football fans and those(me) who can’t sigh a bunt from a punt.

“Knute Rockne, All American” is based on the life of one of Notre Dame University’s most ingenious and beloved coaches. The movie follows Rockne’s early beginnings from his family’s emigration to America, to his days as a Notre Dame student, his career as coach, and his tragic demise.

It’s an enchanting movie tribute about football’s evolution and Notre Dame’s struggle to effect itself out of mid-western obscurity; but it is primarily about a man. A man who was a mentor to the many he coached and a revolutionary of the sport of football. By the extinguish of the movie I came to have a deep respect for Knute Rockne as a man of intellect, passion and integrity.

Pat O’Brien does a stirring portrayal of Rockne. My one complaint regarding his performance is that he is too mature-looking to characterize Rockne during his early years and perhaps they should have had another actor for those scenes.

Buy,Download, Or Stream Knute Rockne All American! Click Here

Another puny gem is seeing a young Ronald Reagan as the ill-fated George Gipp. His deathbed scene is one of the most touching moments in the whole movie.

I found the action sequences a exiguous plain and homogenous, (perhaps followers of football will feel differently) but it does not distract from the rest of the movie. My only other complaint is the soundtrack, which seems to consist of the Notre Dame fight song played over and over again in 115 different renditions.

It’s worth noting that although the conceal is colorized the movie is in shadowy and white.

Though this film deserves a full-blown special edition designed with adults in mind–or at the very least a book detailing its afraid production history–the best treatment it’s had to date was the 2004 TMS/Funimation/Our Time Family Entertainment DVD from 2004. That disc has long been out of print and fetching inflated prices via eBay and various Amazon Marketplace sellers.

Buy,Download, Or Stream Little Nemo: Adventures in Slumberland! Click Here

But now it’s assist. And despite Amazon incorrectly listing the aspect ratio as 1.33:1 and the distributor as Platinum Disc, rest assured that this is EXACTLY the same disc recount as the 2004 edition: the film is presented in ANAMORPHIC WIDESCREEN, with 5.1 Surround Sound (plus a basic Stereo option) plus all the extras from the new release, which are decidedly aimed at children unfortunately. You get: static-screen character profiles; a Slumberland Singalong featuring three songs from the film; a “Beget Your Gain Royal Scepter” craft project (text frames) and four trailers, one of which is for a computer-animated children’s feature called A WOBOTS CHRISTMAS that looked so horrendously out-of-date even in 2004 that it could only be a Christian film, plus three other trailers for worthy better productions: the likewise computer-generated Canadian feature SANTA CLAUS BROTHERS (2001), the flat-animated short NOEL NOEL (also from Canada), and a lengthy space for one of the early ARTHUR DVDs.

As with the Funimation edition, the packaging states the film runs 100 minutes, while the film itself actually runs 95 minutes. No astronomical deal, and at least it’s not the heavily chop version that appeared in the days of VHS.

Buy,Download, Or Stream Little Nemo: Adventures in Slumberland! Click Here

But the genuine gem here is, as mentioned, the WIDESCREEN presentation of the vastly underrated Slight NEMO. If you’re a fan of either American, Disney-style animation, or Japanese, Miyazaki-style anime, you OWE it to yourself to remove up this budget-priced release to contemplate what you missed.

If you’re looking for friendly extras, your best bet these days is YouTube, where you can glean several “Making of” features from around the time of the film’s release (notice for these ones: =mhS6jPZvURI , =IJ6f81ZYIfI) as well as Osamu Dezaki’s 1987 pilot anime film (=fCLXfJFOlUY&NR=1) and the rare and inspiring Miyazaki test footage (=fnL-6yLzgWA) that never made it to the final production once he left the project.

Fantastic to finally have this film serve on DVD, and at a decent effect to boot!

Bradbury and Giraud’s influences are determined. The memoir is filled with goodwill and heart without being sentimental or maudlin. Miniature Nemo breaks a promise and unleashes the Nightmare King’s powers against his friends in Dreamland, and must face his fear to rescue them. The images of Dreamland are breathtaking. The jester-goblins are endearing. Flip’s character is a mischief and has many faults, but not of cynicism. There is no adult subtext, no disparagement or side cracks, no misplaced self-consciousness anywhere in this movie. It would appeal to enthralling, luminous, creative children, and it would assume their parents’ interest and adore too. I hope it is re-released soon.

When I heard about the arrival of Sincere Bout High School, I was skeptical at first, because of the fact that it was centered around fighting. While I am a immense fan of Street Fighter, most fighting animes don’t have any region, and don’t do well at all. I had heard safe things about the series, and I had happened to go shopping a day or two after it came out, saw that there was only one copy left, and decided to give it a go.

“Samurai Girl: Right Bout High School” is about a girl named Ryoko Mitsurugi who is titled as the best fighter at the school, and Is always being challenged by different teams or people — and these fights are actually encouraged by the school board. In the first episode, Ryoko finds a necklace that transports her into an alternate realm to defeat monstors. She later returns and tries to figure out what she had unbiased experienced. Ryoko’s rival is Azumi Mitsurugi, and they’re always arguing over a guy named . Although they are rivals, Azumi tells Ryoko that she can learn to near her skills by becoming the apprientance of a mysterious man named Tessai Onizuka, who teaches her to consume her weapon as a sword, and as a stick.

The animation is extremely marvelous for a television series, and there weren’t any noticable jumps or rainbows around charectors. Shading is done wonderfully, and colors are knowing and shining.

The sound is fair your classic TV stereo sound.

The menus were done very well and creatively. The menu looks like an actuall fighting video game match going on between Ryoko and Azumi. The sub-menus observe like options menus and select-a-charector type menus.

There are four episodes on the disc. “Enter the Samauri Girl”, “The Strongest Man Joins the Fight”, “Enter the Plot of the Swordsman”, and “The Girl with the Deep Shadowy Eyes”.

Some of the english mumble actors on Exact Bout High School have worked on previous shows like Cowboy Bebop and Rayman Earth, so they should be recignizeable.

Some extras include four “Special Ruin Corners”, which are petite extras hosted by the two main Japanese advise actresses.

The first four episodes are very first-rate, and the prove is promising. We honest have to behold where the series takes itself.

I came into this with attractive indecent expectations, and left suitabily surprised. While the basic area is rather hackneyed (super-skilled kendo girl fits in the school league, but also finds a pendant that makes her punk demons in another world from time to time), the characters are actually splendid likeable, even if they are celebrated anime archtypes. The present does a superior job of keeping the mood light without becoming completely flippant, and the episodes really soar by. The fight scenes are the obvious standouts, with tall choreography and pacing, but the other scenes of character and spot building are also done well enough to own your interest.

The dialogue is actually attractive speedily and witty, and the translation is attractive apt, which certainly helps matters. Visually, the expose has nice production values, with well-articulated motion and vibrant, shapely colors. Character designs are also very well done. The fight scenes in particular are very well done, and the motion in these scenes is easy to follow. If you’re looking for a lighthearted and fun anime with some really well done fighting sequences, you really should check this out. It’s certainly worth a search for.

I haven’t read Theodore Dreiser’s “An American Tragedy” on which this 1951 film is based, but I can stare how the word “tragedy” is veteran in its classic sense – that of a character who meets peril because of a tragic flaw. So even though purists might glimpse “A Residence in the Sun” as a romanticized version of Dreiser’s fable, I certainly found it serious enough for me.

Directed by George Stevens, the film opens with Montgomery Cliff thumbing a walk. He’s going to the town where his rich uncle owns a mill. He’s awkward among his affluent relatives and tickled to score a job, any job. And so even though he has to commence at the bottom, packing bathing suits into boxes, he’s aware of his future opportunities. Shelly Winters is cast as a factory girl he starts romancing. But then, his fortunes suddenly turn, he’s invited to more and more upscale social events, and he falls in admire with Elizabeth Taylor. The position thickens as Shelly Winters announces her pregnancy and Montgomery Cliff finds himself trapped. The consequences are horrific as we gape his dreams all atomize down around him.

I was captured by the yarn correct from the beginning in a screenplay that kept the tension mounting and never let up. I identified with Montgomery cliff and found myself sympathic to his jam. He plays a complex character and has a lot of suitable choices to create. He sweats, he shakes, he cringes, his eyes enjoy with tears. Certainly, he was one of the finest actors of his time and his performance is elegant. Elizabeth Taylor was unprejudiced 17 years passe then and distinct was a beauty. As she explains in an interview as portion of the special features on the DVD, this was her first serious role. “Before that,” she says jokingly, “all my leading men were either dogs or horses.” She also tells us that Montgomery Cliff, with whom she maintained a long friendship with until his death at the age of 45, was her first movie kiss. “I had only unprejudiced had my first ‘real’ off-screen kiss objective two weeks before,” she says. Shelly Winters talks about her role too. She wanted the role of the factory girl badly. However, at the time, she was typecast as a glamour queen. And so she dressed in an extremely humdrum device when she went for her conceal test. She sat demurely in the office and George Stevens didn’t even look her.

I loved this film. It had everything. Romance. High drama. Immense acting. True choices. And I also loved the “gradual the scenes” special feature that was on the DVD. “A Space in the Sun” might have been made more than 50 years ago, but the theme is universal and as worthy today as the day it was written. I therefore give it my highest recommendation. It’s simply fantastic.

Theodore Drieser was among America’s earliest realistic authors, and his massive 1925 AN AMERICAN TRAGEDY, loosely based on actual events, was a best-selling shocker filled with premarital sex, abortion issues, and social failures. The modern was filmed in 1931–and Drieser was so outraged that he successfully sued Paramount to force reshoots and a fresh edit. The result did not please Drieser, Paramount, or the movie-going public, and when censorship began to rear its head both the recent and movie were quietly shelved.

By the gradual 1940s, however, censorship began to relax, and A State IN THE SUN was among the first films to hold advantage of the fact. Unlike the 1931 film, producers did not attempt to film the whole of the novel; they instead focused on the second half. The result was singularly great.

George Eastman (Montgomery Cliff) is the dreadful relation of a wealthy family–and when seeks help from them he is given a menial job in the factory, where he becomes intimate with factory worker Alice (Shelly Winters.) But when George is suddenly promoted he begins to enter the world of his dreams–and it includes glamorous socialite Angela Vickers (Elizabeth Taylor.) And now only the commonplace and unexpectedly pregnant Alice stands between him and all that he has ever desired.

The script veers toward excess more than once, but director George Stevens and his wonderful cast carry the film to unexpectedly much enact. Previously known as a sex-bomb, Shelly Winters fought hard for the role of Alice and with it gives the first in the series of truly knowing performances for which she would become so well known. Elizabeth Taylor was one of the leading beauties of the camouflage, and her acting chops had been in positive evidence for some time before A Area IN THE SUN went before the cameras, but it here that she first truly showed what she could do with serious drama; she is flawless. And then there is Montgomery Cliff.

Although Marlon Brando and James Dean made “Way Acting” a household term, Cliff was very remarkable of the same school, and he broke fresh ground in film several years before either Brando or Dean made the shroud. And A Set IN THE SUN shows Cliff at his finest, offering a truly improbable, remarkable performance as the highly-driven but morally archaic George Eastman, stumbling over ever trip-wire society can dwelling in his path. It is a truly devastating performance, gut-wrenchingly painful in honesty, offered without a designate of artifice in evidence.

As the film progresses the suitable issues evolve in several very unexpected ways, most particularly as they reference degrees of guilt, premeditation, and at what point intent becomes the same as fact. In the process A Position IN THE SUN develops a highly disconcerting “there but for the grace of God go I” quality. I mediate this particularly proper for those among us who can gawk aid upon what might best be called “youthful indiscretions;” we are left to wonder what choices we might have faced if things had been only very slightly different in our lives.

The DVD print is not remastered, but it is pristine, and it comes with a small but engaging bonus package that includes interviews with the surviving stars. Strongly recommended.

“Smallville” fans continue to perplex me. It seems that the majority of “Smallville” fans think what I and those with whom I sight the series have deemed the weakest seasons of the display to be the show’s best years. Similarly, while I found the show’s sixth season to be its best since Season One, most fans have ranked it among the series’ worst. I’m not putting down those who deem differently from me, but I have thoroughly evaluated each season and I cannot imagine what these viewers are seeing that I am not. There are those who are now dreading the next season and the season which may follow (creators Al Gough and Miles Millar have said that the note will urge no longer than eight seasons) . After Season Six, however, I am eagerly awaiting more of a demonstrate that has, after years of stumbling through piles and piles of mediocrity, finally reached its potential.

In Season Five, Clark Kent found himself without his most beloved “guiding light” when his father died. The feelings of loneliness grew as his relationship with Lex Luthor crumbled, rebuilt as a bitter rivalry, and Clark was forced to push the worship of his life, Lana Lang, away. To compose matters worse, Lana took refuge in Lex’s start arms. By the extinguish of the season, Clark had learned to deal with his disaster and had a better sense of who he was, but he aloof had a long scheme to go before becoming the Man of Steel. In Season Six, Clark’s destiny grows a lot nearer. Season Six revolves around Clark’s discovery of who he is through two major storylines: 1) the tormented relationship between he and Lana Lang (which should have ended seasons ago and has now reached the point of absurdity), as well as Lana’s potentially strong affections for Lex, and 2) Lex Luthor’s like a flash loss of morality and Clark’s realization that he alone can halt him. There is a third major storyline as well, dealing with a number of alien ghosts which rush from the Phantom Zone in the season premiere; Clark must round them up before they wreak too noteworthy havoc.

There are a number of subplots too. The largest and most accepted involves Oliver Queen, played by Justin Hartley, who was cast in the title role of “Smallville”’s failed spinoff “Aquaman.” Queen is a young, shapely businessman who arrives in Metropolis with a sunless secret: he is the Green Arrow (one of DC’s most common heroes), a hooded rogue who protects those who need protection. He is also a sort of Robin Hood – which is abominable news for Clark, whose mother is now a full-fledged, current politician. Queen also has a checkered past with Lex Luthor, which makes for one of the season’s more bright subplots. Others include Chloe’s relationship with spunky young photographer Jimmy Olsen (played by Aaron Ashmore, whom I personally secure extremely irking) and Lois Lane’s beginnings in journalism.

I had a number of complaints about Season Five, and even a few seasons before that. The writing was foolish and predictable and the dialog was impartial trash. The acting was lackluster. The directing was virtually non-existent. The music was frankly turgid. The sixth season, however, corrects all of that. The writing is, for the most portion, salubrious. The season’s yarn arcs were intricate and spellbinding, and more importantly, each individual episode was a blast, well-written and suspenseful. Thankfully, the writers finally focused a lot less on meteor freaks (in fact, they hardly slit up at all!) and a lot more on other foes, in this case the “Zoners” (those who have escaped from the Phantom Zone) . The dialog picked up a lot as well, and felt a whole more natural and realistic than it did in previous seasons.

The acting improved as well. Tom Welling’s Clark seemed rather oafish in the previous season, but in this season, he is Clark Kent once more: strong, doughty, and salubrious. John Glover is as luscious as ever, and Michael Rosenbaum gets a much-deserved dose of unflinching depraved. Erica Durance begins to demonstrate promise as Clark’s future esteem – for example, “Crimson,” a fan celebrated episode in which Clark is exposed to red kryptonite after a kiss from Lois, who herself has been drugged with a admire potion. Allison Mack is especially fun, and the writers have mercifully saved us from most of her godawful one-liners. Even Kristen Kreuk, whose character I couldn’t stand in previous seasons, improves slightly.

The explain picks up some astounding style from its directors, something it was completely devoid of in Seasons Four and Five. A spacious example of this is “Wither,” which features some aesthetic visuals. I don’t know what happened to Price Snow, but his music went from cringeworthy and weak to downright incredible. His accept is hip, creative, cold, and grandiose, exactly what it should be. I really enjoyed hearing the music in each episode – even when Snow’s theme for the Green Arrow is a painfully certain rehash of Danny Elfman’s theme for Tim Burton’s “Batman” movies.

As far as the episodes go, this season holds a variety of standouts. The season premiere, “Zod,” is astronomical. It’s not as anecdote as the fifth season premiere, but it’s very wintry anyway. Though I quiet derive the producers’ failure to cast an actor as Zod downright injurious, Rosenbaum plays his possession of Lex very well. Hearing Rosenbaum order “Superman II”’s classic “Kneel before Zod!” is really a delight, and the splitting resemblance between the disembodied Zod and Terence Effect in “Superman II” is determined to please fans of the films. “Sneeze” introduces a unique power for Clark: elegant breath. “Justice” is a very fun episode and has been called the best episode of the series by many. I don’t agree in that aspect, but it is very dapper to peep all the show’s past superheroes gathered together. The inevitable “It’s All In Your Head” episode comes in the effect of “Labyrinth,” surprisingly a very delectable episode (in a hooked sort of intention) . “Freak” puts forth the revelation that Chloe herself has some sort of meteor power and has become a meteor freak after being exposed to so mighty kryptonite. That’s an moving and tense episode. “Promise” is a painful, dramatic episode, but its successor, the super-violent “Fight Club”-inspired “Combat,” is a genuine blast. It’s probably one of the show’s weaker episodes, but it’s also one of its most fun. Personally, I loved it: seeing Clark dress up in leather and kick the s— out a jacked-up wrestler, seeing Lois in tight red leather – substantial fun to be determined.

“Nemesis” is one of the series’ strongest episodes, in which Clark and Lex are trapped in an underground tunnel and forced to deal with their issues which each other. Kudos to the writers for thinking this one up. The dramatic confrontation between Welling and Rosenbaum, Clark and Lex, righteous and putrid, is fair excellent. “Noir,” unfortunately, is not. What seemed like a shiny conception – play the reveal as though it were a film noir in the 1940s – is inspiring, but limited more than that, and the final product falls flat on its face. As always, the season goes out with a bang, a lot of them, with “Phantom,” which leaves one character on his diagram to jail, three characters possibly expressionless, one superpower revealed, and introduces a character I have long awaited but belief I would never seen on “Smallville.” It also featured a much-advertised “death” of a major character. I would like diminutive more than to gape that character actually be killed, but the fact that she’s not is ridiculously certain.

At its attain, the sixth season of “Smallville” is a extraordinary surprise. It’s quite possibly the best season since the show’s outstanding first, and it’s the first season to truly approach its potential since the series’ early years. I have no opinion what happened between the raze of Season Five and the premiere of Season Six, but everything that was so deplorable with the explain was drastically improved. Season Six is quality, comic-bookish, fun television, and although the second half of the season is rather lopsided (”Progeny,” which features a guest appearance by Lynda Carter, is arguably the most slow episode of the entire expose), it’s a spectacular season. Clark has yet to skim, and the demonstrate hadn’t really flown since the beginning of Season Three, but with Season Six “Smallville” soars as it, like its young hero, seemed destined to from the open.

I loved season six of “Smallville” and will lift up the DVD position the day it is released in September. I consider Tom Welling does an satisfactory job as Clark Kent. The series wouldn’t be going into a seventh season if Welling didn’t divulge as Clark but he does. The acting has always been a strong point of this series and who doesn’t treasure Alison Mack, Michael Rosenbaum, John Glover, and the rest? “Justice League” was an outstanding episode as was “Combat,” “Promise,” “Phantom”, and others. I didn’t care for “Static” very mighty but that was about the only mediocre episode as far as I am concerned. I can’t wait to eventually behold Tom Welling don the Superman costume on the final display. Season Seven should be big too.
